The red dog card game is a bet on one thing: will a third card fall between the first two? It sits with the other house-banked games in the online poker Philippines overview, but it asks for no hand ranks at all. The two cards dealt face up set the odds, and the rules below follow the casino version as Pagat prints it.

Red Dog Card Game Deal and Ante

A hand runs in a fixed order.

  1. You place an ante before any card is dealt.
  2. The dealer turns two cards face up.
  3. If the cards leave room between them, you choose to call or raise.
  4. A third card is dealt and compared with the first two.
  5. Ranks run from ace high down to two, and suits do not matter.

If the third card falls between the first two, you are paid on the scale below. If it falls outside, the ante and any raise lose.

The Spread and the Payout Scale

The spread counts the ranks that sit between your two cards. Pagat’s casino version prints this scale, and a table may print its own, so read the pay line on the screen.

SpreadPayout
15 to 1
24 to 1
32 to 1
4 or more1 to 1

A wider spread is easier to hit, so it pays less. A tight spread of 1 leaves a single rank that wins, which is why it pays the most.

Consecutive Cards and Pairs

Two special cases skip the third-card bet.

First two cardsResult
Adjacent ranks, such as Jack and 10, or Ace and KingPush, and every ante is returned
Equal ranks, third card differsPush, and every ante is returned
Equal ranks, third card also equalPays 11 to 1 on the ante

With a pair, the dealer deals the third card immediately and no raise is offered.

When You May Raise

A raise is open only when at least one rank sits between the two cards. You can call, which leaves just the ante in play, or raise by adding a bet up to the value of the ante.

Pagat’s worked example uses a 3 and a 9, a spread of 5, with a stake of ₱1: ante ₱1, raise ₱1, third card an 8. The ₱2 in play is returned together with winnings of ₱10, because the spread line pays on the whole ₱2.

Problem

You cannot find a raise button after a pair or adjacent cards.

Fix

No raise is offered there. Adjacent cards push and a pair triggers the immediate third card, so wait for the next hand.

The Older Red Dog: High Card Pool

The other game named Red Dog is a home game, also called High Card Pool. Three to about eight players ante into a pot and each receives five cards. A player bets that a card in the hand is the same suit as and higher than a card the dealer turns up, with a stake between the ante and the whole pot.

That game has a pot, not a pay scale, so none of the numbers above apply. Its variants include Shoot and Slippery Sam, where a dealer puts up a bank.

Problem

You apply the spread scale to a game played for a pot.

Fix

Check how many cards you hold and whether there is a pot. A pot with five cards each is High Card Pool, and the spread scale is for the casino game only.

See the Three Card Poker steps for a game where you decide after seeing your own hand, or the high low card game page for a single higher-or-lower call. You must be 21 or older to play.

FAQ

What is the spread in Red Dog?

It is the number of ranks between the first two cards. A 3 and a 9 have five ranks between them, so the spread is 5.

What happens when the first two cards are a pair?

A third card is dealt at once. If it matches again, the house pays 11 to 1 on the ante; if it differs, the hand is a push.

Is Red Dog the same as Acey-Deucey?

The casino version is, yes. The older home game also called Red Dog, High Card Pool, is a different game with a pot and five cards each.
