Gambling and debt grow together when the money you play with is not yours to lose. The pattern is described in the effects of online gambling section: a borrowed deposit, a loss, a second loan to win it back. This page shows the arithmetic with a worked example and lists the steps that stop the debt from growing.

How Gambling and Debt Connect

PAGCOR’s warning signs say problem gambling can lead to debt, missed bills and other money problems, and that you may start borrowing, stealing or selling belongings to keep gambling. Gamblers Anonymous asks whether you ever gambled to pay debts or borrowed to finance gambling. Three habits carry most of the weight.

  1. Borrowed deposits: the money for the cashier comes from a friend, a lending app or a credit feature, not from savings.
  2. Repaying with play: the next deposit is meant to win enough to repay the loan.
  3. Chasing losses: after a loss you deposit again to get even, which the APA lists as a sign of gambling disorder.

A Worked Example with Round Numbers

The numbers below are an example chosen for easy arithmetic, not a record of any real player or lender. The 5% monthly interest is also an example, so replace it with the rate in your own loan terms.

StepWhat happensAmount owed
1You borrow ₱5,000 to deposit₱5,000
2You lose all of it in one evening₱5,000
3You borrow another ₱5,000 to win it back₱10,000
4You lose that too₱10,000
5A month of 5% simple interest₱10,500

The player has now lost ₱10,000 of borrowed money and owes ₱500 more each month. Pay ₱1,000 a month and it takes over ten months, with no money left for play and no savings either. The lesson is the order of events: the second loan is the one that doubles the debt.

Wallet Loans, Credit and Promotions

A wallet or app that lends you money can turn a quiet evening into a debt in two taps. Check the terms before you accept anything, and never choose a loan to fund a deposit.

On 14 August 2025 the Monetary Board resolved to suspend in-app gambling access from Bangko Sentral-supervised mobile payment apps, in view of what the memorandum calls the “heightened public concern on its financial health impact to consumers”. Memorandum M-2025-029 told those institutions to remove such links within 48 hours. Wallet apps no longer open casinos, so if an offer says otherwise, close it.

A promotion can add to the problem when it carries a turnover requirement. A requirement of 10x on a ₱200 deposit, as an example, means ₱2,000 of bets before a withdrawal, which is a reason to keep playing. The turnover glossary page defines the term.

Steps to Stop the Debt Growing

Do these in order, today if you can.

  1. Stop depositing. Close the cashier and log out of the lobby.
  2. Write every debt on paper: who, how much, the due date and the interest.
  3. Tell one person you trust the full figure, not the comfortable one.
  4. Ask the lobby’s Live Chat to close or limit your account, or apply for PAGCOR self exclusion as set out on the online self exclusion page.
  5. Do not take a new loan to repay an old one without reading its terms in full.
  6. Call the National Problem Gambling Helpline at (02) 8248 9568 and ask about referrals.

Problem and Fix for Debt Moments

Problem

You plan to repay the loan with tonight's winnings.

Fix

Stop. The Responsible Gaming reminder is that gambling is not a source of income. Repay from your budget, and ask the lender for a longer schedule if you need one.

Problem

You are hiding the amount from your family.

Fix

Write the figure down and tell one person. A spouse, child or parent can also apply for a family exclusion, which the casino age limit page lists beside the other barred groups.

Where to Get Help

All three are printed on saved pages of the body named.

  1. National Problem Gambling Helpline: (02) 8248 9568, 24/7, confidential and free, but not a financial assistance service and not an emergency line.
  2. NCMH Crisis Hotline, printed on the NPGH pages for immediate danger: 1553 or 1800-1888-1553.
  3. Gamblers Anonymous Philippines: 0915 938 2808.

FAQ

How does gambling lead to debt?

Usually through borrowed deposits and chasing losses. A loss on borrowed money leaves you owing it, and a second loan to win it back doubles what you owe before any interest.

Should I borrow money to gamble?

No. PAGCOR's Responsible Gaming reminders say never to borrow money or use all of your resources for gambling, and not to chase your losses.

What should I do if I already owe money from gambling?

Stop depositing, list each debt with the amount and due date, tell someone you trust and call the National Problem Gambling Helpline on (02) 8248 9568 for guidance and referrals.

Nakakautang ba ako sa online sugal kahit maliit lang ang taya?

Oo, kung hiram ang pang-deposit. Maliit ang bawat taya pero nadadagdagan ang utang kapag ginamit mo ang susunod na loan para bawiin ang talo.
